DIY Rock Knob Shifter for Auto Trans
I wanted to change up the interior of my Jeep by adding some Rock Knobs to the Auto Trans selector shifter and the transfer case shifter. But didn't want to pay $39.00 for each knob and $25.00 for the Auto Trans adapter from Lo-Dapt. So this is what I put together.
Parts:
2 Rocks (from yard)
JB Weld (in garage)
1/2"x8" galvanized pipe ( Home Depot (HD) $2.66)
3/8"x4" galvanized pipe ( HD $2.58)
1/2"x 1-1/2" Compression Spring (Part of a 4 pack pf springs HD $3.98 Part#759 796)
5/8" OD Lock Washer (in garage)
27/64" L, 29/64" OD x 324" ID 10 7 Nylon Spacer (HD $0.54, UPC #30699 872787)
2 x 4mm set screws ( in garage)

Step 1:
Cut the threaded ends of each pipe so that the 1/2" pipe was 4" long and 3/8" pipe was 3" long.
Used a 5/8" drill bit to ream out the 1/2" pipe, and then used a rat tail file to smooth out the insides of booth pipes.
Step 2:
Glued the pipes to the rocks using the JB Weld. Worked best by putting the JB Weld inside the pipes and then sitting the pipes on top of the rocks.
Step 3:
Drilled and tapped a 4mm set screw hole in the 3/8" pipe proximately 1" down from the rock.
Step 4:
On the 1/2" pipe; Cut a 3/16" (TYPO IN PHOTO) wide by 7/8" long slot starting 3/8" up from the bottom of the pipe. (I used a Roto Zip tool and file for this)

Step 5:
Painted the pipe fittings
Step 6:
Installed the washer, spacer and spring (see note 1) as shown and then installed the knobs.

You change gears by pressing down and then shifting, Rock On!
Note 1: The extra spring was needed due to the weight of the rock pushing down on the shifter release rod. The OEM spring that hold the release rod up could hold the rock up in Park but in Drive the Transmission wanted to slip into 2nd.
