DIY Steering Wheel Controls SWAP - Volume on Left
First of all this is my first post on here and it's a write-up. I searched and did not find anything for this. I recently picked up a '13 JK 4 Door and am loving it. However, coming from my other car I quickly learned to HATE that the volume up and down was on the right on the Jeep. I was constantly changing songs or stations and it was annoying. I am left handed (dont know if it matters) and my 335i was a 6 spd manual, so I am used to having one hand on the wheel and one on the shifter. Soooooo I took apart my wheel and decided to see what I could do.
As always it is recommended to unhook your battery for electronic things.
*I TAKE NO BLAME FOR ANY DAMAGE YOU DO*
Step 1:
Take out the 2 airbag bolts. There are two 10MM bolts on either side of the wheel. Once both are taken out, gently pull out the airbag. I opted to just set it on top of my column and was able to work fine with it there. You do not need to pull the wheel off or go much further.
Step 2:
Using your fingernails, or a knife if you wish, pop out the volume up/down and station/preset buttons from the steering wheel. I used fingernails and they popped out easy. Using a flashlight and pulling a little, youll see a little prong with a push down. If need be, once you unplug the rocker switch control thingy, label them so you know which is which.
Step 3:
Using a flashlight and looking in through the hole (see picture) you'll see the 2 prong plug you disconnected. Carefully push it down with a finger or whatever and pull it out through the bottle slit (see picture). Let those sit while you do the soldering/crimping/whatever.

Step 4:
I did take any pictures for this as I was talking on the phone the whole time to my mother (I burnt myself too). Basically I cut the prongs/rocker controls wires in half, spliced and soldered in about 10 inches of wire. make sure you do enough to go across the wheel and down with the curve, as well as 3-4 inches on each side. There is room to tuck any excess. You can crimp or tape but I personally like to solder and heatshrink any wiring I do.
*IMPORTANT* There is limited room behind the switches so try and make the connection as close to the plug (not the switch) as you can.
Step 5: (Optional)
Test controls in place before putting everthing back together.
Step 6:
Keep in mind you are *NOT FLIPPING* the switch so the wires point the same as the previous one you took out, but you have to mirror it (180) and bend the wires the opposite way. This is why you want to make the splice farther down so the switches can properly snap into place. Carefully run the wire in line with the wires already there on the bottom. I tucked mine behind the little prongs as to keep them from coming out and hitting anything. Any excess on the sides, I tucked behind the cruise/menu buttons.

Step 7:
Enjoy your volume controls on the left side!
