Default Do it your self Sway bar disconnects

I made a home made version of a sway bar link disconnect right from your local hardware store. All you need is a ( 7/16" Clevis pin thats 2 1/2" long, a 1/2" hitch pin, and a 3/8" metal washer).

Using a 18mm ratchet and 18mm wrench disconnect the bottom bolt of the sway bar link and remove it. Then replace it with the 7/16" Clevis pin with the 3/8" washer and push it through the link.

Then take the 1/2" hitch clip and attacht it to the other side of the clevis pin through the hole closest to the link.

I got all of my stuff at Home Depot in the bolts and fasteners section which the clevis pin cost $2.71 a piece, the washer was .13 cents a piece, and the clip cost .45 cents a piece. All 4 disconnects cost $12.98 all together. I thought this is alot better then paying for a pair of disconnects for $80. Enjoy

Interesting to see how it works out for the long run. Any noise going down the road with these? Any idea on the grade of pin, as far as it shearing?

Post up some results after a few months, if it holds up it sounds good!

This setup will eventually "oval" out the holes. Not to mention he will notice odd sounds when he turns the wheel. If the pins are not strong enough the pin will snap at the time its needed most.

I would not recommend anyone do this mod. It is unsafe and will cause terminate damage to the bolt holes on the axle.

Interesting idea, however there are certain things I'd feel more comfortable investing real $$$$ in for safety reasons.

This sounds like a good temporary disconnect but nothing I would do long term.

I use those clevis and hitch pins to support the folding legs on my train layout, but that's about all I'll use them for.

I was thinking about an idea similar but using the bolts that came with the stock sway bar.

You could grind a flat spot just flatten out the threads basically and then drill a hole. the hole would have to be far enough from the head to put the washer on it. Then I was going to use a spring pin. I was going to do this tonight but ran out of time.

I will do this next week and report out how it works.

so you took out a grade 8 bolt from the suspension and replaced it with a grade nothing pin thats full of holes
when that breaks ,your insurance company will love you ,they wont have to pay for anything
drilling the factory bolt is a much better idea .I beg you ,put the factory bolt back in
