Drilled the side view mirrors!
Me and the Wife did the drilling yesterday in the car wash. Nice and simple and you should have seen the white junk pour out of each mirror. The JK is only a month old !!
Great forum we have here.

Having reviewed all 45 pages and considered all the options - 2 - I have my day planned for tomorrow.
The + 1 has a tea for some ladies at the house so I will set up a couple of chairs in the garage. Invite my son over and we'll ponder greatly over the last remaining decision.
To drill or v notch the gasket. Ah..that is the questions.

That's funny! But it motivated me to go pull mine and change from drilled gasket to cutting away a big V. Otherwise the gasket traps a lot of dirt.
Oh, and BTW, for those of you who suggested Jeep build them this way, on my `09 mirrors, there actually is a notch in the plastic to allow the water out. It's small, but it's there. Too bad the "notch engineer" didn't send his plans over to the "gasket engineer" who's gasket just completely covers the notch!
Yep.. I got my new '09 three weeks ago and just finished this mod tonight. I noticed the first time I washed my jeep that muddy water kept running down from the mirrors. I googled and ended up with with this thread
I decided to remove my mirrors and notch the plastic with my pocket knife instead of drilling. Taking off the mirrors is trivial, just take out those two screws with a Torx T40 bit and you're right where you need to be.
I also cut the foam gasket about even with the metal bracket's edge. The angle of that space is shallow and the gasket blocks a lot.
Here are a couple pics showing what I did.
Before:
And after:
I then tested it and the water drains out quickly.. Much better than before.
I also did the "pipe insulation in the dashboard crack of doom" mod but took no pics of that.
Indeed a great forum here.. Awesome resource.

I'm glad I found this thread. I just picked up my JK last Saturday and had to buff out drip marks under both side mirrors. Hand waxing wouldn't do the trick. So as of this morning, I modified the mirrors. Thanks!
