Default Engine replacement costs

How many hours should it take to replace my 3.8 with a long block remanufactured. Just try to get an idea of how long it should take a shop on average. Motor snapped the crankshaft. This will be my third motor. Thankfully it's under warranty. But I have to pay labor then get reimbursed. Been stuck in Utah for a few day's now. Not how I wanted to spend my vacation. Any ideas on how many hours it should take would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I'm sure that they will charge the flat rate hours. Almost all shops do now that All-Data is cheap and easy for even Bubba Jim's Auto Repair to have on the office PC. I don't have All-Data, but I bet someone here is a mechanic by trade and can get the flat rate time pretty easily.

The shop I hang out at is doing one right now. Looks like about 4 days with one guy working on it.

Looking at some procedures for a 3.6 longblock r&i, I see 18 hours of basic work with exclusions for 'optional' equipment. I don't have access to 3.8 info but I figure this might be close enough to be reasonably helpful. Dirtman's 4 days sounds like a good ballpark that allows for some extra equipment you may have. Here's hoping your bill is closer to the 20 hour mark than the 32 or more.

best of luck to you.

Thank you for the information. It's most helpful. After doing more research it looks like 16 hours for the 3.8ltr R&I long block. 32 hours is what it would take me to do it....4 days in a shop...... OUCH!

$7000 . Rebuilt long block should be $2500 to $3500. Mine has been in the dealer for a month , first motor started to make noise at 21000 mile and replacment at 25000 miles . The 3.8 is a real shit motor

I asked about how much time was booked for the swap and he told me 14 hours and its a 3.6. There are a lot of extra stuff on the jeep they are working on that is making it take more time.
