Default Extra Storage Space for JK Unlimited's with forward muffler

I needed just a little extra storage for my JK, so I took advantage of the space where the stock muffler used to be.

SBK model 3L-1610 was the best that I could find. Would be nice if it was about 5 inches wider, but it worked well enough for me to use.
case interior dimensions 16" X 10" X 5 1/2"
similar to a Pelican case, but had better dimensions than any of the Pelican's.

You have to cut off the heat shield bolts.

Run four .25" bolts through the lid of the box. Double nut for spacing, and you are left with studs:

Pic of closed storage box with lock. The lock is very tight and does not move around (no noise to worry about):

Pic of full storage box. I was able to store a high lift off road accessory kit and a quart of oil. There's still a little more room, but that's all I needed to store. The rear sway bar stops the case from opening too much.

The storage box is fairly hidden:

No, that's VERY damned smart! Great thinking!
Man, if I add hidden storage AND a stealthy garage door opener (ie. in the rollbar pad), it will be almost as cool as a Bond car!

I like that idea...I'd be a little worried about knocking it off on the rocks but I guess you can pull it off if you are going rock crawling.

I've been thinking about taking advantage of the space by cutting the floor out around the existing storage space and putting in a 25"x12.5"x7.25" box in its place. This would give you significantly more storage and if you made a good solid metal box should stand up to rocks. The only thing that has stopped me is I haven't been able to find a pre-made box even close to those dimensions (been looking at ammo boxes etc.). I will eventually have one made but don't have the funds to do so right now.

Where did you purchase your box from?

The correct title for this thread should be: Pelican Brief

Nice work.

Now you got me thinkin. How do I make it easier to remove the case?

I'm going to change the stud bolts from the jeep to the case. That way I don't have to climb under the Jeep to remove the case. Just four nuts from inside the JK trunk, and I'll be able to remove the case. This will also allow me to completely water proof the case.

Will update the pics when I get it finished.

I have been thinking about this too.. (Posted somewhere in another thread)

found it..

EDIT: https://www.jk-forum.com/forums/show...0&postcount=27

I remember seing some rocket, or morter boxes somewhere that looked close to what we want..

I would take a sawzall to that area in a heartbeat to put a metal H2O proof box there..

Default "adjustment" To The Rear Storage Area

I went out and got to poking around in the back of the Jeep looking for those missing cargo points..

Opened up the storage cover and the carpet and the fire ext, tow rope etc. down there was full of condensation and water.

Lots of water dribbling out of that carpet section..
I pulled the rubber plug in th bottom and lots of H2O ran out..
Well I am thinking that is kind of useless.. good for a DOG DISH..!

So I took everything out and let it dry..

BUT CAVE MAN THINKING PREVAILED, and I cut the carpet out so items that could handle moisture could live down there..

AND... the water that got in from the top being off or side and rear windows being out would drain..

I took some pictures of the process, and if you will notice, you can use the rear child restraints clips for cargo attachment points..

I put 2 fender washers on the carpet (far back outside corners) where the D rings of some nature will get installed..

Got everything put back in and it should work great.. I keep most of my rescue, working stuff, and parts in the box anyway..

OHH and by the way.. Didn't locate the factory cargo straps back there..!!

Pic's posted in 'My Gallery" because I haven't learned how to post them "here" yet..
