I have done the stubby on my stock front bumper, and I I thought about the same thing. I think there would definitely be some sawzall action needed on the top of the bumper depending on the winch.
The Rough country RCX winch plate fits factory bumpers and does not require cutting. The shackes that you can purchase with it also can be used as a stand alone replacement (without the winch plate) for the factory tow hooks if you are more inclined for the D-rings.
I saw a pic somewhere of a winch installed recessed behind factory bumper with fairhead (I thought) between the fog lights -- very slick & subdued install. I'm thinking it would be a great way to get winch installed and looking good while saving for a bumper upgrade. Anyone done this? Pics, advice on parts/process?
