Smile Homemade rear shelf for JK 2dr

I searched to see if anyone else had posted some thoughts, ideas, or projects on this, that I could compare to mine, to see about some changes I might want to make. I didn't see anything.

I got tired of having all my stuff in the rear fall out while trying to get to my compressor, or tools, or cooler etc. The idea struck me while I was cleaning out the back of the Jeep, when I noticed the peculiar recesses behind the roll bar. I thought, hey! that looks like it is made to fit a 2x4! I started cutting right away. Yes, a 2x4 fits in there perfectly. then I cut a piece of 3/4" oak plywood to fit the shape of the seat and the roll bar., and cut the edge at an angle to match the lean of the seat back. later, I decided to cut a piece out of the shelf, to allow me to slide my folding campfire cook grille down behind the seat. Then. I added Quick Fist Clamps to mount my ax underneath the shelf. It all fits well enough that the seat has to be folded forward to remove the shelf, which will lift right out of it's spot once the seat is folded a little forward.

Later on, I decided to coat it with Herculiner liquid bed liner.

Then I decided it was too dark under the shelf to see anything at night. I had some strip LED lights that looked white when I bench tested them under fluorescent shop lights. I was a little surprised when I got done and they were purple... Oh well, works good enough! I glued the strips to the liftgate with 3M Emblem Adhesive.

I like something like that. I prefer running the back seat just to keep gear restrained behind the seat but it seems most 2drs ditch the rear seat and then build storage. Kudos and thanks for sharing with us.
