Jerry Can mounted on Spare Tire
I have been through the forum and haven't seen any Jerry cans mounts other then to the tire carriers. Here is one I did to the JK. Living in the Gulf area we left for Hurincane Rita and wished I had more petrol.
Parts:
Blitz Jerry can 5 gallons
Blitz Jerry can holder
1/8" thick stainless steel disc 12-1/2" diameter
2 pieces 1/8" thick stainless steel 1" wide x 12" long
4 pieces 1/2-13 all-thread 8" long
Nuts, flatwashers, and lock washers.
Black can of spray paint
Disc is made to fit inside 16" rim with holes for all-thread between the spokes.

It only took me a few hours to fabricate it and looks good. I was worried about the added weight on the tailgate but it's not a issue. The total weight is 38 pounds full and 13 pounds empty.
It's less then a bike rack and bike. In addition the assembly is solid and when I try to move it the entire Jeep rocks.

Fantastic job!! Looks phenomenal!! You used Stainless Steel so it wouldn't rust or for some other reason? I haven't ever had much luck drilling through stainless with anything less than a drill press. If you were to use regular steel plate - would you use the same thickness?
I used stainless so it wouldn't rust. A drill press does help. The thickness is fine for carbon steel or stainless. I probably could have even went down to 10 gauge material but wanted to ensure there was enough rigidity for the can.

I like this--lots! Eventually I will replace the rear bumper, but preparing to send my son off to college (Caltech is his first choice, if accepted), I'm a long ways off from being able to afford a new bumper. I just might do this mod in the very near future! Thanks, great job!

If you increase the thickness to about 1/4" on the disc and cross members plus increase the all-thread to 1-8 it could work. The washers are 1.25" diameter so there is room for the larger rod. Also the rim contacts the disc with a 6" diameter. Remember the items will be hanging out further and the moment will be larger so the increase size will compensate for it.
I'm actually thinking of adding another jerry can holder from Adventure Trailers and attaching it to the hinges of the tailgate. This will be a permanent mount. Also in conjunction using the tailgate shock project (https://www.jk-forum.com/forums/jk-write-ups-39/tailgate-shock-project-done-4622/) so my wife won't crush the tail light when she swings the gate open. I can convert the tire mounted jerry can holder to a Hi-Lift mount. Good idea!
