You could use it to (more securely) mount a box in the back and bolting it down using the studs.
I had the idea because I think it was toyota who was putting something similar in their truck beds a while back.

VW new Beetles have a dash pod that mounts where the the Daystar panel mounts. It actually sits on top of the stock panel and is double sided to it. It works great and I've had about 50k miles on one doing road courses and drag strips with no ill effects. You could mold a gauge pod onto a stock panel with foam then cast a plastic mold. If you do a search for VW new beetle 3 gauge pod you'll see what I'm talking about.
