Default Review/Write-up - Smoked Light Kit (eBay)

So, My lovely soon-to-be wife backed into something the other day, luckily only the tail light took the hit, she managed to not even dent the metal. (Lucky)

Well, this gave me an opportunity to upgrade the lighting... I have been eying this kit off eBay for awhile, so I sprung fo kit, along with the LED bulbs.

Here's what I found:

Kit Info:

eBay title: 07 08 JEEP WRANGLER JK SMOKE TAIL LIGHTS+MORE Unlimited

Seller: Neondials

Paid: US $184.96 +$24.95 shipping

Included: Six (6) piece set - Tails, Side Markers, front signal lights + Amber bulbs for the front lights

Not Included: Red + Clear bulbs for tail lights.

Image from listing:

LED Bulb Info:

Purchased from: superbrightLEDs.com

Items ordered:

2 | 4410-x9: 9 LED Festoon bulb - 4410-CW9: Cool White - $ 4.74 each (These were for the interior dome lights)

2 | 3157-x45-T: 45HP-LED 16mm Wedge Base 3157 Tower bulb 3157-R45-T: Red - $ 24.95 each (These were the brake lights)

2 | 3157-x45-T: 45HP-LED 16mm Wedge Base 3157 Tower bulb 3157-W45-T: Cool White - $ 24.95 each (These were the reverse lights)

*Plus shipping - $10.70 UPS*

Installation

Tools:
  • Phillips Screwdriver
  • Center Punch, or Pick
  • Clean Rag, tissue, etc. (To handle the bulbs, I'm a little anal)
  • Flashlight

Tail Lights:

1. For anyone who has never removed the tail lights from your jeep, it can't get any easier...
2. Using the phillips screwdriver (or drill, whatever) remove the two screws from the lense on the INSIDE of the light.
3. Pull the housing away from the Jeep, that's all. Only two screws hold it on.
4. Disconnect the harness from the Jeep. (Driver's side has two plugs, make not of which is which, passenger has only one.
5. Take assembly to your bench, or on the tailgate area, twist the bulb holders and remove from housing.
6. there will be clips holding the harness, these will pry off with some force, and you can reuse them if you don't destroy it.
7. Make note which harness is for the brake lights and the reverse lights. If you get confused, the plug for the brakes has THREE terminals where the bulb sits, the reverse has two.
8. Get your LED's bulbs and place them in their respective harness
9. Plug harness back in Jeep.
10. At this point you need to test the harness, LED bulbs can be put in backward, and you don't want to get it all back to gether then have to take it all apart to turn the bulbs around.
11. once everything checks out (try reverse as well), put harness into new housing, place harness holder into housing, and screw housing back into Jeep.
12. Get a friend to help you test it, because you will want to see how ice it looks yourself!!!

Turn Signals:

1. These were very easy...
2. reach from the side of the jeep and twist bulb holder out of housing.
3. at this point you will see the connector has a lock on it to keep it from coming unplugged. (it will be red)
4. Slide lock back and unplug harness.
5. Lights are held in by some clips, just squeeze and pop out from behind.
6. install new smoke housing
7. install new amber bulbs plug housing back in and lock.

Fender Lenses:

1. These were a bit trickier, if you have OEM fenders (I did )
2. The lens is sandwiched between the fender and the inner support.
3. You will have to use your pick to pop out the rivet that is closest to the front of the Jeep on the edge of the fender. (It may break)
4. These rivets are plastic, so they might break.
5. Remove the next one back as well.
6. reach in and unplug the connector and remove the bulb holder and bulb.
7. With a helper, peel gently the fender from the support.
8. if you look at the smoke one you have you will see it clips from the top, and you have to tilt it in to remove the clips.
9. it should pop right out (MUCH easier with a friend)
10. Installation is the reverse of removal. (Easy)

Conclusion:

Fit and finish were good, the front signals seemed a little loose, but the OEM ones were not in that tight.

The LED lights look AMAZING!!!

The reverse lights are bright, I was backing into my garage and I could see the difference.

Overall look I am VERY happy with.

Seller shipped quickly and provided tracking numbers.

SuperBrightLEDs was a flawless painless transaction. Worth the extra $ for quality Service and products.

** The only thing I have to work out is the blinkers, they are a little faster, to be expected. I will do some research on ballasts or relays and report back. **

I will also likely swap out the front bulbs for amber LED bulbs, just to have them... I should have ordered them at the same time, but I wsan't thinking.

Here are some pics of everything:

Well I think they look nice. Just need to smoke out the front fog lights from yellow to go with it....and maybe some angry eyes on the headlights.

The fogs are lamin-xed, and will likely be upgraded. I agree the yellow doesn't match anymore.

The headlight will be IPF's or LED's soon.

Cool find.

I've cracked my left rear taillight.
I see from the pics you left is still good...
Would you be interested in shipping your factory left one to Savannah for some $$?

PM me if interested.

I'm looking at doing that next year. I don't think the tail lights are too dark. Looks nice

I tried putting led 3157's in my 2011 jk it didn't work. It seemed like the base of the buld wasnt long enough. I don't know who makes them.

I love the look, nice work. I don't think they are legal in Manitoba though otherwise I would be doing the same.

Is that seriously what the Florida license plate looks like? WTF, it looks like an ad for a kids cartoon.
