Smittybilt tire carrier
Thought I'd post up my thoughts in the Smittybilt rear tire carrier I just installed last week. This is the carrier that installs right in place of the factory carrier. Initially I was skeptical about it handling the weight of a big 35" tire suspended just by the gate. Install was very simple and it has some decent adjustability for raising or lowering the tire based on the type of bumper you have. Tire stays very steady with no wobbling, rattling or any noises at all.
I really like that the tire is held very close to the body also.
My only issue with the design is where the hub actually meets the mount. It's not a plate with lugs to mount too, it's a post more or less, that the hub "sits" on. I would have preferred it to be close to the size of the hub but it's not. It's about 3.5" in diameter so the hub is much bigger so it essentially "sits on it and relies on the plate and twist lock that holds it on for stability. Mind you it does hold very strong with no movement, I just don't get why the huge difference in mating surface size? So, I had some pipe insulation and slipped that over the mount so it filled up some of the space on the mount post while also preventing metal to metal contact. Solid and sturdy overall piece, just half assed engineered in this one particular area. If you're looking for a inexpensive mount that is very sturdy this is great. Even though it's really a non issue, Just expect some typical Smittybilt brain fart engineering.
I'll post up some pics when the forum remote plug in gets fixed as it won't let me upload

I purchased the Smittybilt tire carrier about three months ago and have done some hard wheeling. So far no rattles or problems. I probably will go with an evo or genright tire carrier later because I would like to add some jerry cans and a hi lift jack. But for now it is awesome.
