Default Tuffy Overhead console

Yes, these are expensive, but I'm tired of my CB being uner the seat where I can't change channels when I want. I bought one because I decided to mount it overhead, and was scared someone would steal the CB in the summer if I made a simple mount to go there.

Ok the Tuffy, it's anything but simple, and be warned......it's not really made to fit a full size CB!

These are the mods I performed in order to mount a Cobra model 29.

First off, the opening is not quite big enough for the cb to stick out of. I realize this may be on purpose to hold its security more, but since it has the locking door, maybe not. I chose to grind off about 1/8th of an inch on the left side of the box. This way the CB can stick out of the box ever so slightly.

Then I decided that I didn't want to worry about the factory CB mount, so I decided to take a trip to Lowes for some bolts and nylon spacers. While I was there I decided to grab some pads so that i could raise the radio while holding it in place, keeping it steady, and trying to prevent a few rattles. I had to drill a hole on each side of the tuffy box. Here are the pics of what this produced. Oh by the way, had to cut the bolts and the short side spacer down.

Next, you MUST!!!! purchase a 90° connector for the antenna cable. As I said, I really don't think they actually intended people to put a full size CB in this, although they say its made for it.

Well that is how you get a full size in the Tuffy console box. I'll finish up the install tomorrow and take a few more pics.

Does the console feel like it was worth the cost? I know they are strong, but do you feel it was worth it for you? I've been debating to get one for months now...

It is really nice. It slides back to give access to the top handle. I feel safe knowing it won't get stolen. Heck you can barely get it in the box, much less get it out in a hurry!

A few more pics. I chose to run short extentions from the back of the CB to underneath the sound bar. This I figured would aid me in removal of the entire unit from the vehicle. I really didn't want to splice the antenna cable, but SWR checked out fine so all is well. Not sure what the personal height cut off would be for getting one of these..... I'm 5'8" and have no problems, but still catch myself worrying I may hit my head on it.
