Moisture was starting to build up inside one of the brake light housings creating a “green house” effect. Drilling the two small holes in the housing, is the best thing anyone can do to correct this issue.
  1. Remove the hardware and the brake light housing. Note: Remove just the two inner screws (towards the tailgate and not the outer screws as this simply retains a molded plastic support peice as to keep the housing flush to the curve of the jeeps body)
  2. Remove each bulb for inspection. Note: In most cases if moisture has occurred in the housing there's a good indication that the bulbs could have corrosion and would need to be cleaned or replaced.
  3. Pour out any moisture within the brake light housing via the bulb mounting ports.. and allow the housing to air out.
  4. Drill two dime sized holes in a less noticeable area and low and inside the brake housing will allow any moisture build up to escape and create a better airflow within the system. Note: Do not drill holes in the top (inside) of the housing because this would allow more debris and moisture into the housing and could increase chances of an electrical short and corrosive bulb sockets.
  5. While the housing is airing out, clean or replace the bulbs. Note: Because moisture was prevalent in one of our housing, I needed to remove any corrosion from the bulb contact wires and within the contact points. Using a nail file or fine sandpaper, scuff the wires and other contact points within the system. In some cases, an eraser is all thats needed to clean these contact points.
  6. Before installing the bulb within its contact mount point, Rotate the gasket located around these contact point 180 degrees as to reseat the gasket upon remounting back into the housing. Then reconnecting to the brake housing to the body using the two retaining screws. Note: Make sure none of the wires have been pinched or any loose connections have occurred with the housing replacement.
