That's exactly why I haven't added the third row seat, I would love to have the extra seating! It's just not tested and certified/approved. While it may be safe, and you probably won't ever have issues, if something were to happen the insurance company would hang you out to dry.

I'll be converting mine to a drawer system in the next few days. It is still the best mod I've done, though.

My top does not open, not designed to. It great to have lots of stuff in the back and still be able to slip something under
Might put draws in, but just going to see how it works as we live with it. Post pics when you do.
Might have to do some type of ramp as the dog seems to have a bit of a problem now :-( bless him, just can't or won't jump at all

The under-floor storage mod has been in service for quite a while, now. It was well worth the effort.
I made one for a friend of mine, but he wanted it a little deeper, so I used 2 X 6 steel studs, rather that the 2 X 4 steel studs.
It's a little higher than I would like, but holy cow, the stuff he can get in there.

Here is my take on it:
I extended the lid right out to the tailgate and for a lock I mounted a bracket to the lid and to the tailgate so the tailgate locks the lid down.

I really like your idea but I needed a little larger storage box so I used 4" studs for a base frame and added a 2.5" stud frame on top. The top frame is just bolted to the bottom frame and can be easily removed if we need more room on top. I did not install the floor leveler boards since we don't need them.
I haven't worked out a latch yet but am working on it.
