Default Ideas around Anchorage - Summer Vaca

My wife and I are coming up in July. This will be our second trip. We'll be flying into Anchorage and driving from there. We hit Denali, Kenai/Homer, and some other miscelleneous stuff on our last trip.

So far, we're planning to hit:
  • Valdez
  • Girdwood
  • Wrangell St Elias
  • Maybe Kenai/Homer again

Any ideas for cool stuff to see that isn't too touristy that fit into these regions? We like outdoors as well as cool old historical/abandoned/unique stuff.

Thanks!
Matt

Hatcher Pass/Independence Mine is a great area to check out. The pass should be open to and from Willow.
I would say Talkeetna but it'll be tourist season and the town gets over run during the day but I still think it's a worthy place to look at. The Talkeetna Roadhouse is a great place to hang and meet people. It also has a really decent nightlife along with their own brewery.
You're going to enjoy the drive to Valdez.
