12,000lb Winch Overkill?
Hello my neighbor is basically giving away a WARN 12,000lb winch to me and I was wondering if 12,000lb was a bit overkill for a 2 Door Wrangler. I was also interested in figuring out which bumpers would be able to fit that 12,000lb winch.
Thanks,
Ralph
Thanks,
Ralph
Also, make sure it's a 12V winch ...
I'm not sure there is such a thing as "overkill" with rescue gear.
If the winch is in good condition and meets your parameters for bumper, etc., then go for it. For the money you are saving, you can get a nice synthetic line as well.-Dawn
It is my belief that a winch can never be too big.
Model #? Certain bumpers won't fit certain winches. Also, consider whether or not you want the winch to be mounted within the bumper or on top of it. Your preference will impact your choice of bumper.

Thanks! I think within the bumper would be ideal but I'm open to anything. Here are some pics to help you guys out.

Hopefully the internals look OK BTW ...
Congrats.

I just bought a Warn Powerplant HD rated at 12000# for my 2dr Rubicon.
Winches are rated with most of the rope spooled out at 1st wrap and each additional wrap the rating decreases significantly. In Az, most times we use the winch the distance is not that far, as we use tree savers to rig the line, so we are only using the 2nd from end wrap which is probably half of the rated winch pull (depending on winch of course). Also you have to consider the weight of the 2dr Jeep (around 4400# if its a hard top) plus occupants, plus added on items (skid plates, bumpers, racks, lift, tires, etc) and cargo (recovery gear, tools, cooler, camping equipment, etc). All this can add up to over 5500#s or even 6000#s if you carry too much stuff. Then put your Jeep in a bad uphill spot with vertical ledges against your tires or in deep mud to the frame, you might be glad having the extra pulling power, especially for the price you paid.
