Arrow 2007 necessary mods/maintenance for reliability

Hey guys, I bought a 2007 Unlimited X auto back when it was brand new. Sold it after about 4 years though, and am looking at getting a 2 door X manual 4x4 of the same year, 2007. One necessary mod for me was the chromoly axles after I shredded my U Joint on little more than a pothole. These things had/have weak parts in places. Other than that though, it was pretty solid even with the mods I did (see sig). Well after a few years have gone by, I'd like to see what y'all with early model JKs have noticed more as required mods to give it better reliability, a la Toyota. Would I be significantly better off going with a 2008 or something for a little more $$? Any advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated. I've done several searches but haven't found anything, or my search skills suck.

Looking at the consumer reports reliability review for 2007-2010 is very disheartening. But the aftermarket support for JKs is excellent... I don't want to invest in a liability, though I do plan to modify for light wheeling and somewhat significant exploring. More for getting to the awesome places than specifically wheeling.

Wow, that transfer case issue sounds like a major pain in the ass!

I knew going in I'd eventually have to fortify my axles, but there's a huge part of me that would want to just swap them completely with aftermarket if I was going to do anything to them at all. I'd like not to spend a billion dollars, but that's gotta be one of the major fuses of these jeeps.

That's really great to hear! Any type of preventative maintenance/mods you've done that you think helped ward off gremlins?

I know you've asked about earlier years but my 10 has 80k on it with no issues yet. I changed the plugs at 50k, clean the throttle body every 15k and change my oil religiously.

Wasn't it the 07-09's that had main bearing issues? Then the 12+ with cylinder head issues? Obviously this doesn't count everyone, just people who post up with issues.

'07 JKU with 85k and all is good, had cats replaced under 80k warranty. some little things like wheel sensor and TC cable end. BTW, the TC cable takes like 5 min to fix with no tools. I keep an extra end in the glove box. My opinion is get one stock and mod it. I work in a mod shop that works on jeeps all the time and seen many people pay large bills because they paid retail for lifted jeeps someone sold that needed lots of repair work. (tie rod ends, ball joints, drag link ends, wheel hubs, ect.... Also pay a shop to look it over, sometimes a 1/2 hr labor saves a S**t ton later on. Happy Jeepin

Depending on your usage, going aftermarket or building junkyards is probably the better way to go. It is well worth the time spent to at least do some research.
