Default 3.21 Gears

I have the manual trans with the 3.21's. I have a 4" lift and 35" tires I want to install the 4.88 ring and pinions. Will the 4.88's work in this ratio differentials. If not Does anyone know who makes a carrier (locker) for this. I am being told that the carrier in the 3.21's may be the wrong size.

Default Question?

What does the tire size do to the drivability with this gear ration (3.21)? I have 3.21 and probably will set up with 31 inch or 32 inch tires, what will happen to the drive. I already know what 31 inch tires did for my 4 cyl. YJ and I'm not wanting to do that again.

No lockers are available at this time, as far as I know. I guess you/we'll have to call the dealer. I've called 2 different ones to try to get prices for carriers and install kits and keep getting parts guys that don't know a diff. from their arse.

I'm running 3.21's w/ a 6 spd. and 307/70/17's (34's) and it's liveable. I took it to Tellico recently and it did fine. 1st gear in low range was plenty low enough for all the obstacles that I tried. More gear would be nice, but it'll get me by 'till some locker options are available. I only want to pay for the labor once. My installer charges the same price wether he installs a locker or a regular open carrier.

Your carrier should work. the actual bearings are the same as other models, but the pinion seal/bearing is different

going from 3.21 to 4.88 will require a new carrier. that's a huge jump. i'd suffer through it for now, and regear when lockers become available, and do it all at once.

I too have talked to 3 five star dealerships, one offroad shop and a major jeep mod shop and can't get a list of parts I need to change my 3:21's out for 4:10's. I have decided to wait until the new Superior gears start delivering to folks and pick up a used set of 4:10's (Dana 30 front, Dana 44 rear) and then figure out what other install parts I need. I can't believe you would not need a different carrier, but I had one dealer tell me that they only have one carrier listed in his parts list. If anybody has a parts list with numbers, it would be great!

I'm having the same problem. One of them told me the same thing they told you about the carrier. Said the only have one listed. I can't remember if it was for the front 30 or rear 44 though.

If somebody has a FSM and/or a parts list and can post up some info, that would be great.

I have been considering buying the FSM on CD, would it give us the information needed here as far as what parts numbers and components we need to do this?
Thanks,
Jim

From what we see the carier breakdown is that of traditional 30's and 44's. So you WILL need new carriers for upgrades from 3.21's to 4.10's, 4.88's and 5.13's. Good thing is the parts are available. both the 30 and 44 fronts come with the 4.10 option from the factory.
