Is the tube diameter and wall thickness the same on the Jk Dana 44 and 30?

Yes. The only difference between the 2 is the center section and the use of 30 spine axle shafts on the 44.

The axle tubes are the same (as standard) but everything else is different. The JK and D60 use different end forgings (the 'C') but they are very similar in size and strength. All the wheel end parts, hub, spindle etc are much different than the JK parts that bolt to the PR44 or std JK housing. We use a real spindle system instead of unit bearings. The 60 also comes standard with locking hubs. The D60 axle shafts are 1.5" 35 spline units with much larger u-joints. The 35 sp D60 shaft is much different than a 35 sp RCV Dana 44 shaft. The RCV shaft is only 1.5" in diameter for the last prox 6" of the shaft. The rest of the shaft is identical to a std 30 sp RCV axle.

Obviously, the D60 also has a much larger ring and pinion in comparison to a 44.

While a D60 front assembly certainly has its place in the JK world, for most JK owners, a well built 44 front will outlast a fully polished 44 rear. A great combination is a PR44 front and (of course) a PR60 rear. With this combination 37's are no issue and larger tires can be run with success if you use a little common sense. I don't have lot of confidence in a 44 rear (even polished) with 37's. I've seen a ton of R&P failures with that combination.

How much will they ideal setup of a PR44 front and PR60 in the rear run? say... 5.13s w lockers (the best you have) for a direct bolt on to the JK? if that makes sense

Great thread lots of useful info. Perfect timing for me too, as I am looking to swap out my D30. With either the Dynatrac or the Enhanced Mopar D44 from ORE.

That is the setup I would like to endup with at some point, pr44 front and pr60 rear. Only thing needed then would be a stronger xfercase.
