315/70r17 on 5.2" of backspacing?
Hey guys,
I'm running a 2.5" lift and have a set of 17" rims with 5.2" of backspacing (Pintlers, QT rims). I'm planning on going up to 35s, but have heard mixed things about rubbing with 315/70r17.
Anyone know -- do they rub?

You are reading mixed reviews because, as with most things involved with building our jeeps, there isn't a simple yes/no answer.
Given the same stated specs, there are variances in both height and width between tires from different mfgs. Running different psi's can change the height. Different rim widths might also. Vehicle weight. Tire sidewall thickness. Load rate. Actual measured lift height. How centered the axles are. Whatever else. Soooo, just because someone else did or did not have a problem doesn't mean you will or won't.
Stock rims are supposed to be roughly 6.25" backspace. The general recommendation for a 35x12.50 is 4.50" backspace, or 1.75" further out. Your 5.20" rims will move the tires out appx 1 inch.

As stated above there are a lot of factors that come into play on whether or not your tires will rub. I am running method 17x8.5in wheels with 4.75in backspacing (slightly more than the wheels you mentioned), with GoodYear MTR K 315/70-17s set to 27 psi. I have about 200lbs worth of bumper and winch hanging off the front end. I have 1.25in bump stop extensions in the front. I have and adjustable front track bar and have centered the axel. At full stuff, I get minor rubbing between the back edge of the tire and the frame of I turn the wheel to full lock either direction. I plan on adding another 3/8 in of bumpstop up front, and if this doesn't cure it, then I will shin the turning stops slightly.
As stated above your results might vary, but depending on how much bump stop you add, you might rub. The general accepted rule is 4.5in back spacing to clear with no rubbing, but I am getting away with a little less. Sort of.
I know it is vague, but maybe it will help?

I have run pintlers with 35/12.5-17 Toyo's and now run Salta's with Toyo 35's and I have rk 2.5 lift. With no issues. I have done the Rubicon and dusy ershim and go to Moab often and no issues. Two jeep buddies run pintlers and savgres with no issues. Rubbing on frame or sway bar when fully flexed is not going to hurt anything.

I'm running the Mopar 2in lift, which is actually closer to 3in of actual lift. I have 315/70/R17 BFG KO2's. My wheels have 4.5in Backspace. Absolutely, no rub at full turn lock. With 5.2" of backspace you will likely be cutting it close, so it will be hard to say yes or no ahead of time.
Mopar specs that came in their install instructions. (ie calls for at least 5in of backspace)

Thanks guys. I know 4.5" fits fine, but i have a set of 5.2" so it isn't super helpful :(
@jadmt -- you're on every single Wrangler forum aren't you? I have a JKS/RE springs 2.5" and am looking at the Toyo RT 35x12.5r17's and 315/70r17 MT ATZP3's...I'm leaning towards the MT's (weight/price), but I'm going to be pissed if I have to buy spacers for my already-aftermarket wheels. Have you run any 315's on the Pintlers?

Me and many, many, many others have no problems running Pinters with 315/70R17 or 35x12.50r17. Done it on two jeeps with different tires. I run the Synergy high steer kit as well with no issue. AEV themselves and many out their in the wild also run 37's on them. You'll be fine.
Edit: if this is your first time you will have to do the normal prep for 35's to include if you have the factory bumper you'll need to trim the plastic air dam, depending on year, you need to trim the rear pinch and if you have a rubi you should trim the rock rail. And finally, assuming your 2.5" includes proper bumps that will keep your tires out of your stock fenders.

Here is mine with AEV 2 inch spacer lift and AEV Pintlers with 315/70r17 Cooper STT Pros. Pleanty of room and no rub at full lock. I think it rides better than stock. Did not have to trim the airdam on the 2016.

I have an AEV 2.5 kit with 315/70-17 Cooper S/T MAXX on Salta's with no rubbing.
That said, we don't rock crawl, more of a modified overland style off roading
