Hi Dirtman

I think the 33" looks better than the 33" with the lift.

Actually, I'm quite surprised, I assumed the lift would only have a minimal effect.

The 37's with 5.5" is nice but would mean I couldn't enter any shopping mall or supermarket car park - I'm told it would be the same with the 35's - would mean I would have to rely on internet shopping, then I suppose I wouldn't need a car - that solves that then!

That may rule out 35s. Here is a view of 33s on my four door (back in the day--they were Dick Cepek FC IIs). I've since gone to 35s and they poke out about another quarter to half inch. These are 4.5" backspace wheels, so if you keep them on stock wheels, 35s may be okay. But, then you may have rubbing issues and may need to do some fender trimming and perhaps use washers on the steering lock to prevent turning the wheels too far.

BTW, a data point for you: The stock Rubicon tires are actually slightly larger than these 33s (as viewed when parked side-by-side). And they obviously fit without rubbing on the stock wheels. So, if you're trying to move from your 255s (which I assume are stock Rubi tires), be careful that you actually get a larger tire if that is what you really want.

I had 33s for 6 months (dick cepek fciis) but with ome hd lt lift for 3 inches even my 6 yr old daughter had tire envy from Jeep events. Swapped up to 35 fciis (practically new 33s still sitting in my garage to wifes dismay)! 33s too small under more than 2 inch lift.

That looks great, what lift did you use?

I've decided on 33" tires but being totally non technical I understand from speaking to my local garage that a spacer can be placed on the wheel to make it look more 'chunky'. I was planning on using the stock wheels and having them powder coated matt black.

However, I assume that different tires come in different sizes - can someone explain how that works and the recommended width for a 33" tire to obtain that chunky look?

If necessary I will sell the stock wheels to get the right look, but the wheels need to be matt black. Legally the tires can overlap the fender by about 1/2 inch.

Have you thought about getting wider fender flairs? This will keep you legal and allow you to run a standard size 33. If you use the factory wheels you will need to use a spacer which will put you well over 1/2" past the factory flares

Here are my 33s on a 2" lift. I think they look just a little too small but look GREAT. I will try to move up to a 34-35 later on.

Wow! The 33's with no lift look really good...much better than the 33's with the lift actually.. With the lift the 33's look small.

Agreed. If the pictures are accurate (which I'm sure they are) I see no reason to add a lift to 33" tires if it's done for cosmetic reasons only.
