Default 33's vs 35's weight/diameter vs performance

Hello all,

i have searched all over and i cant seem to find the answer to my question, I have 33 inch tires that are 74-lbs each if i go to a 35 inch tire that is 10 to 15 lbs lighter will I really see any difference?

My current set up is a 15 WW with 3.73 gears 6 speed manual with 295/70R17 falken wild peak a/t's that weigh in at 74-lbs each.

I want to go to either 315/70R17 Wrangler DuraTrac / Cooper Discoverer STT PRO or something along those lines, both roughly 10 to 15 lbs lighter than what i have

diameter of the tire will effect the rpms so will most likely hurt power more than weight ie with a taller tire your rpms will be lower so you will not be in your power band. A heavier tire may have more effect on braking performance tho not necessarily as the weight of the tire is further out on a taller tire so rotational mass may be harder to stop. A lighter tire may feel better tho on rough roads as not as hard on your suspension.

Why not meet half way and go for a 34" 285/75R17?

The diameter has a bigger effect on performance than weight.

I have never thought about 285/75R17 which might be my answer to get the more aggressive look i want without sacrificing too much performance. Right now I like the performance of my current set up its just not as aggressive as I wanted. I did run the same size falkens on a sport with 3.21 gearing which i didn't hate(even know a lot of people told me i would) but I was not absolutely in love with when i took it on a road trip either. I kind of figured that new 35's on my current Jeep would be similar to the sport with 33's and that i would be indifferent about performance as i don't rock crawl it, it does see the occasional mud hole or sand and gavel trail/pile.

Adding a wider tire also makes a significant change to your fuel economy. Narrow tires and a smaller lift are definitely the way to go.

I'm running 285/70s in a GY Wrangler Duratrac. At 26 psi, mine measure about 32 5/8" at ride height. I get a lot of compliments about my Jeep having the "perfect stance." And, while I do think the stance is very nice, I'm planning to move up to at least a 315 (34-inch) size when these are done. Really, though, your style of wheeling doesn't sound like it requires a lot of tire height, so a 33 or 34 might be just right for you. Or, you could consider a BF Goodrich 35, since they seem to run a bit small at ride height.

Good luck with your decision!

Go 315 /70/17 Duratracs, 3.56 gears, Teraflex 1.5" Leveling Kit. Very light tires and smooth for on road. Bonus is they have MT look but won't ruin your hearing

i really like the nitto trail grapplers they are e rated and may be stiff for some but i find them to be very good on road off road and in all conditions 35s would fill the wheel well to much seeing no lift for me . these tires have 60 thousand miles on them now and have been great
ill get another set next year when they need to be replaced if they ever wear out lol they are heavy but i got 410s gas mileage has not suffered at all from what i can see and no wear on any of my stock parts

This is my current setup, Those Falken's are like an E rating sidewall tire hence the weight. I have a 3.25 inch lift on it as well i just don't think it looks aggressive That's why i was thinking Taller M/T's and possibly some other body mods down the road.
