Default 35 in with 373 gears

I couldnt find any info on people's experiences with 35" tires and .373 gearing. please let me know if this would be stupid for me to do. I am in desperate need of new tires and I would like to upgrade.

What are your thoughts on this setup with a manual transmission?

That's where i currently am and outside of some downshifts dealing with hills it's livable. Would have done them already if I didn't have the itch to move to 37s, but that's going to be a bigger and more resource intensive project than I'm ready to do at the moment.

The guys with manual transmissions just can cope with being under geared a little better as they don't have the wide ratios, unlocking of the torque converter and high revs on downshifts. The jumps between gears are twice as large on the automatics and they don't have a predictive transmission shifter when they see a big hill coming.

I also have exhaust, intake and a programmer as upgrades so I'm sure that helps. It's definitely not a replacement for gears but it was never as bad as some of the horror stories were and I need to thank TEEJ for giving me encouragement that it would be OK.

Eventually you'll want to get to 4.88s or steeper, but I think it's important to get your tires first and see where you stand.

Same here, she down shifts when going up hill or a head wind at highway speeds, or when towing a jet ski. I just run with Overdrive off. Small price to pay for such a great upgrade from stock. Good luck.

I've got the 3.73's with an automatic and it definitely struggles on hills and strong headwinds if the overdrive isn't turned off. I'll even shift down into second depending on the situation. I plan on regearing to 4.88's or probably 5.13's, but for the cost of the upgrade, there's other mods I'd rather do first...I'll just deal with the 3.73's for a while.

You should definitely be better off with the manual considering you get to choose when to down shift.

I have 35's and 3.73's/6-spd, and it is fine. You don't get to use 6th as much, but it is still very driveable.

Thank you for the info. I'm going to take the plunge and get the bigger tires.

I've got 32's and 4.10s and she still does this.

Im on 35 bfg ATs with 3.73s, its more bearable than I thought after reading forums. I can cruise with OD with no big problems, it drops out on inclines, but I hold my speed pretty well. Driving down my 2 lane hwy where I may have to quickly pass I have opted to just chill behind a slower driver. Just not enough getup to pass before the next blind turn. Around town and off stoplights there are always peeps ahead of me (always were), but im still faster than some granny's out there.

I knew I wanted lift, tires, gears but could not afford all at once. I dont regret doing tires/lift first and will be fine waiting the 6-8 mos before I can afford gears. I will probably get a rear bumper/carrier for the bigger spare before the gears now.

For automatic owners with overdrive off your final gear ratio is nearly identical to 5.38s with overdrive on. Here's the quick math,

3.73 / .69 = 5.41

So it makes a very tell tale sign of where you want to be when you do get gears and of course get your overdrive back nearly full time.
