Default 37s vs 38s

Question and backstory:

My last jeep was my first jeep I ever built up. Unfortunately about a month ago it was totaled in a bad accident. It was a 2008 4 door on 37s....all other essential work complete.

I have purchased a new jeep (2014 JKU).

It is going into the shop next week for a massive overhaul. 3.5 AEV SC lift....PS flares....then I am going to take it the next day for a regear and artic truss kit.

My question - i can get 38x13.50 toyos cheaper than the 37x13.5....

Their page says they weigh 6lbs more per tire and are .77 taller inflated.

My question, is that going to make a big difference...im hesitant to go with the 38s but actually it would be cheaper and on paper that doesnt seem like a big difference...that said, I could be totally wrong.

Any insights appreciated.

Unless your getting a rubi I wouldn't bother running those sizes. Some ppl do make it on 37's and light wheeling on a Dana 30 but it's not recommended

In my opinion once you get that big there isnt much of a difference between a 37 and a 38. So I just say do which ever you would rather have. Your gonna break at some point with anything.

Before you pay for a gear install keep your eyes peeled for a pre-geared take off D44 for the front. Check out my build on wrangler forum, I've got about 3k in both my axles, not much more than a re-gear would cost and my front is built to the max. Took me about 3 months to find matching take off rear axle in 4.88. Seems to be more front axles since people go to 60s.

This is my third built jk and I have run 38x15.5s on all of them. Ive always wanted 40's but dont want to spend 20k on axles. Everyone runs 37s so I wanted something a little bigger and different. Even though you don't get a ton more height, its kind of a happy medium (At least in my warped mind it is). Go with the 38s, you will be happy you did!

I've run Toyo 37's for several years and recently went to 38's and feel like they look a lot taller. My next step will be 40's after I rebuild axles too. Love my 38's'!

I ended up going 38's instead of 37's on my rig. I don't regret the 38 at all.

Great info and really nice rigs.

Im leaning toward 38s.....i think at this point ill regret not going an inch taller and hey they're cheaper too.

Also, I was told by someone else last night that has way more experience in the jk world than me that if my axel were to break with 38s that are only 6lbs heavier, then they would of broke most likely with the 37s too.

Those 38's sure look good! What backspace are you guys running? I'm running 37's Toyo's on 4.25bs with no rubbing. I've been thinking of going to the BFG 38's cause they are actually 10lbs lighter than my current 37's. I know the op was asking about toyos, which are about 16lbs heavier than the bfg when comparing 38's. I think the toyo 38 is about the same weight or more than some 40's. A 38 Toyo is asking for trouble in my opinion, but I guess not much more than a 37 toyo...
