Default 4.88 / 6speed / 33s Is it overkill?

Hello,

I would appreciate your help on this

I plan to re-gear within a few weeks. I am on 3.73 right now on a 6speed tranny. I have factory the tow group.

Here is the deal:

On winter I run 33s (from October to April). On summer I will run 35s. The JK is used as a daily driver and as a workhorse around the farm. It does rarely see highways. When it does the max speed is around 64mph.

I live in the mountains and the JK spend most of the time going uphill or downhill in about 15% grade slopes. The rest of the time is commuting between the hills on a mix of dirt or awful paved roads...

I am part of a Jeep club and will do about 6-7 trails per year.

The JK is way too sluggish for my usage. I want to make sure I do things right to correct the issue.

My plan was to go with 4.56 gears, but the more I think about it I may be better with 4.88s. And if it is not good enough, add a superchip when they release it for 2011 JKs.

I had some bad experience with modified air intake in the past and do not want to go that route. Live and learn.

Do you think I am wrong with 4.88s? Do you think it would fix my problem?

Sorry for my bad english, it is my second language.

Thank you

Tough one when you mix tire sizes....I have 4.10's with 33's (32.5") with my six-speed, and I find any higher would be spinning way too fast!! 4.88's with 33's you will be really high on the RPM's on the highway.

Same boat with swapping winters and summers. I currently run 32's winter and 33's summer but making the switch to 35's for summer. I am leaning towards 4:88's as after my winters wear down I will search for some 34's or 35" winter tires and I know I will have enough gear if I weigh down my JK for any highway trips.

I have 34s (305-70-17) and I am planning on going with 4.88s. I think since u dont do a lot of highway and when u do u r only going to be driving max 65, I think u will be fine with 4.88s.

My 33s are about 33.4 tall. Right now I keep it in 5th speed when on the highway. (at around 100km/h). Still I am almost never on the highway.

Oh & while ur getting the gears done throw in some sort of traction device such as a selectable locker or LSD! Awesome improvement for the JK.

I had the exact lift/tire size set up on my 07 Sahara 6 speed and installing the 488's made it drive sooo much better. Off road was great and on road was even better. The rpm's were a little high on the interstate, but not bad. It was great being able to maintain your speed on hills without coming out of 6th gear. I'm looking forward to doing it again on my 2010.

Thank you for your help. I will go for 4.88 and may try to find taller winter tires at some point. Still there is not much of tall and narrow winter tires...
