Did you have 3.21 gears from the factory or 4.10s? What about you Pigina, what did you have? Doesn't ARB have different applications for different gear ratios? Sounds familiar.....not sure if it's the same thing.

I had 3.21 gears from the factory before I went to the 4.88's. Maybe that's why they needed the new carrier for the Dana 30 up front?

I had 3:21s as well and had to get a new carrier for the front as well to get the 4:88s installed.

But, it's great to have 5th and 6th gear back! It's well worth the money.

I agree Rescue. Time to go drive it now. I put about 40 miles on it this morning, and it's quite the improvement over the 3.21's. I'll report back on the results.

Great thread! I'm wanting to upgrade the gears, but still learning all of the specifics. Thanks!

It sounds like you are a novice to Jeeps. If so, I wouldn't take any info. from this thread, but rather read up on R&P installs on the web. Personally I would resolve this issue then never go back to that shop if they said "the stock carrier wouldn't fit with the new gears".

You have to get the right carrier for the ring gear you have. The ring gear is specific to the carrier. As I said before, if you have a thick ring gear it might require a 3.73 up carrier or a standard ring gear would work with the lower gear carrier. I searched for you last night and could only find one superior R&P set for the JK D30 4.88. It did not mention what carrier it worked with. Definitely call Superior before you drive it. Then make sure that the right parts were installed. At this point I wouldn't trust anything that your shop did considering the statement above. If they installed the wrong carrier I'd say it's time for small claims court.

BTW, let us know where you are. I'm sure someone on here or on Pirate can point you to a reputable R&P shop for future work.

I think you directed that at the wrong person. But still, that's why he took it to a Jeep specific shop. Also, the dana 30 doesn't seem to be what I read about the most......rubi's w/the d44.....Even still, this is still a fairly new vehicle with very few parts for the d30. I wouldn't be suprised if a lot of Jeep shops hadn't worked on alot of the X's.

the new D30 R&P is a different than the TJ D30, its a thicker ring and pinion, Superior said thats why they felt safe going to a 5.13 gear.

I'm almost certain we have a lenghty thread on this from when they first came out.. I'll do some searching and post a link
