Default 6spd gear shift knob removal

I was wondering if anyone knows how to remove the 6spd shift knob? Mine has some up and down play in it and being cheap plastic I thought I'd replace it with a nice aluminum one or something. I don't see any set screws in it or anything and it doesn't seem to twist or unscrew, is there a trick to it?

It pulls straight off. Be careful not to knock yourself out when it lets go!

You could also grab it with a large pliers and use a hammer to tap off.

Exactly, make sure no one is looking over you as you pull, I hit my buddy in the chest when I pulled the knob off...it was funny for me, not so much for him!

It is supposed to pull right off but I had at least 4 guys try and couldn't get mine off so eventually I separated the bottom half and then put a flat head screw driver in one of the groves once exposed. Then I just have it a small tap with a hammer and it popped right off very easily

Ok thanks, I was just concerned that pulling on it that hard might cause damage to the tranny or something because when pulling on it I can feel the whole stick move slightly upward too?

Before you go ripping it off, there is a google write up or a YouTube video. I pulled mine off and it wasn't that bad. I can't remember exactly how I did it though its been so long. I think I took a screw driver and separated the lower bezel.
