7Pin trailer plug damaged on the trail
Has anyone had issues with their hitch wiring/7pin plug getting damaged when wheeling? I was out the other day and somehow bent the bracket all the way up flush with the rear bumper and broke all the plastic around the 7pin plug which left the wires and plug hanging down the the ground.
Is there a better place to relocate this so it doesn't get damaged in the future? is there a product out there that protects this area at all?
Thanks

I disconnected the plastic plug (forget what it's called ... the thing that you actually plug the trailer wiring into) and put it in my tool bag. I just have the wires + the small connector tucked up high and dry. If I need to tow, I just pull the wiring down, plug in the plastic connector, and then plug the trailer into that. It doesn't hang down too far during towing, and can easily be sinched up with some zip ties if you're paranoid about it.
Hope that helps.

P.S. I was worried about this when I first got the Mopar towing kit, and I even researched cutting up the bumper to mount it within - there are several threads about this. Once I realized that the plastic connector actually disconnects from the wiring, I was ecstatic.

i don't tow very often so that is most likely going to be the best/cheapest option right now. i am curious to know if there is some kind of skid plate or protection that could be mounted under the bumper to take the blow of object and ruts on the trail rather than the hitch and wiring harness.
I have a 13-pin and mounted even lower because of the crappy Euro bumper, bent the plate countless times (but it holds!) and literally shattered the connector once.
I second the idea of relocating it in an upper position inside the bumper, or in my case I plan to cut the lower portion where the license plate currently seats and relocate upwards the connector and plate (which has the hitch homologation data and MUST be together with the hitch according to most EU countries' legislation) and fab a small skid plate to minimize bending, similar to this:
