I am still under the impression that 10k and above is overkill and 8k lbs is perfect

Yes Sir, it might be overkill but for me it´s just perfect. Also in my second sentence i did say 9000 could be enough. Depends of...
Anyway this is how this should work here, opinions we have more than facts.
I am not hurt by this, just keep coming ! I am not right always and i am able to say you might be right. This is a great forum we have and lets keep it such way. I have learnt a lot from you guys and will hang around with my opinions. Try to bear me.

an 8k lb winch is plenty. I got a 9k lb winch because I liked the brand and it was a good deal, not because of the higher capacity. Like several others have said, if you get an 8k lb winch be sure and buy a snatch block. That way you can double your pull strength if you ever needed to.

That's gross weight on the door jam. That is the max the jeep is rated to carry including it, fuel, people, gear etc.

Ok, then, well if our JK is really only 4,200 lbs, wow! That makes shopping for a winch a tab easier huh? 8k should be just fine.

so 4,200 * 1.5 = 6,300

so 8,000 lbs winch is all we would need.

a rule of thumb I have always heard about a winch is get one that can pull 1.5 times the weight of your rig, and more if you play in lots of mud.

so 6,000 * 1.5 = 9,000 minimum.
This may be a good idea, but personally I think that this is overkill. Unless you're trying to pull in a situation where the object you're winching is trying to get away from you () then I don't think you need any more than your vehicle's weight. Will a beefier winch do a better job? Probably. But will a good winch roll over and die at its max rating? Nope.

think mud-got the liners in they are very nice.
How has that gorilla worked out for you so far? I was checking them out on Ebay, a 12000lb winch for $350? That has got to be too good to be true. Have you used it much? How did it hold up?

well i didnt look on ebay, i went to their website, i did some research and was pleased with what i found, I was also told it was a good tough winch by a buddy (manufacturer) who has one and i can say they are very stout....im actually installing mine this friday morning along with bumpers and a snorkel, ill def let you know. Ill put some pics and stuff up also, but you can check out the site, the 10k is priced very reasonably...ill test it after the install and see what it can do also.

edit:looked on ebay and only saw their atv winches?
