What's the smallest amount of spacer I get away with? I think the smallest I've seen is 1.25". Will that work?
probably but, you may find it necessary to grind down your wheel studs a bit to ensure a proper fit. 1.5" will definitely work.

I was in the same boat (37" toyos with 4.5" backspacing wheels) so I bought 1.5" spacers which are for sale:

I now have TR wheels in the mail with 3.5" backspacing...I don't think I'll need the spacers anymore...

You seem to be very reluctant to use spacers.

If you haven't done so, run a search on them and you will find some very good threads discussing which are the best and how to maintain them.

This may appease your reluctance or convince you not use them.

Some have even added them just to widen the track of their JK.

Just make sure you torque the spacers and wheels properly and inspect them regularly. Those Toyos are pushing close to the 100 lb mark each and that is a lot of rotational mass to stop.

so whats would be a recommended backspacing to run these tires? I'm gonna be getting a set in the spring. I want the rugged ridge wheels which are 4.75"....so if i got the smallest spacer 1.25" i would have 3.5" BS those will stick out pretty far won't they?
