AEV changed their snorkel design!
I bought the AEV snorkel with the pre-filter top when it first came out. My plan was to buy the air ram top later on (when it became available) and swap them. It took so long, that I ended up buying a Safari air ram top instead, and when I lost that one on the highway, bought the AEV top. The Safari is actually a better design, so I bought a Safari again. Anyway, I recently realized that an air ram top must have a 3" section of tube within it to channel rain between the sides, and out the drain slots. Here's a diagram to illustrate:

The older AEV snorkels have a 1" "lip" to mount the air ram, and this isn't enough to clear the drain slots. The newer/current AEV snorkels have a 3" lip to mount an air ram, but also have a 'cut line' where you can chop it to fit the pre-filter. Aside from buying a new snorkel body ($75 from AEV), Dave from AEV suggests that "an easy fix for those with early (short) snorkels or those that wish to run both ram and prefilter. Go to the local exahust shop, have them cut a section of 3" tubing about 3.5-4" long and flare the bottom 1" to fit over the snorkel top (very small amount), then cut a slot in that 1" section so that the clamp can clamp it tight and voila, you can now run both effectively."
