Default Air Systems

santa may bring me an air system..i've been a good boy.

what should i ask for?

i like the powertank system casue it's simple, but is it a PITA to refill it? I have a 2 door and not sure about where to store the tank..any ideas?

do i look at a compressor & tank system? about the same price..are they very high maintence? I have the same question about tank placement..i'm not that handy to relocate my gas tank or muffler like others have..

or do i just buy a compressor and have air when i need? are there any issues wit them? seems like a simple install..

should i worry about an air tank system in an accident? i don't wanna end up like the shark at the end of jaws..
thanks
steve

I have 2 - Co2 tanks, a 10 and a 20 pound and I love them. I find I can fill tires a lot quicker and be on my way in no time at all. Also they work just fine for air tools, as for danger I would not worry as long as you have it secured. I had been using a Power Tank mounting bracket attached to the roll cage in the rear. I have since gone to the 20 pound tank and it's a touch tall for the location I had the bracket in. I have made a box to hold my tools and other items, I just cut a hole the same size as the tank and place it in. I also have used ratchet straps to secure it in the event of a flop or roll. If you decide to go with C02 there are other options than Power Tank or other special made for off roading.

Yep ^^^^, just a few additions. Any welding or beverage supply can fill a co2 for a reasonable price. Also paintball stores but they always seem to be alot more $$.

Unless you go w/ a portable or under hood unit, all oba's (in my exp.) are a pain to permanently mount w/out taking up alot of space.

Powertank is definitely the way to go. A 10lb tank will last for quite a while, filling tires and running air tools on the trail. Just make sure you have a regulator when running air tools. Believe me, the tools can't handle the full pressure.

Is there any catch to running CO2 versus air?
Is co2 ok for tire fills? What about the idea that co2 freezes, is that all in the regulator, or just make sure it's all sealed very well ?
I have a 20lb tank with a regulator, but not sure what to do to make it usable for offroad.

How safe are they in the event of a crash? More of the kaboom factor rather then the projectile factor..

I know of one TJ that went over about 3 times and no kaboom and thankfully very little projectile even when it was not secured properly.

That I don't worry about.. CO2 tanks are just under pressure. the weak point is if you snap off the top piece, then it can be propelled like a bottle rocket. That is why you always see them with gaurds on them.
I tried to use mine to inflate a tire but the chuck got iced up.. just wasn't sure if I had the pressure turned up too high or if there was a leak from me just tossing it together without making sure everything was sealed and tight!

i have a 10# Co2 tank that i built, i have it secured to the rollbar with 2 ratchet straps. it fills the tires very fast.
35x12.5x15's 12psi to 32psi in under 10 minutes (all 4 tires)
total cost for everything was about $180.00.
there are a few places here in town that i can have it filled, just gotta call them up ahead of time to see if they're filling Co2 tanks that day.
