Default Air troubleshooting

I've been installing a viair compressor and a 2 gallon tank. Tank, compressor, pressure gauge, auto shut off... everything is working as it should. I put two ball valves on the tank, intending to have a front and a rear QD. Today I put in the front QD in the center of my light hoop. See photo.

There doesn't seem to be any leaks, in my lines, but when I open the ball valve, the QD is bleeding air when nothing is connected. When I connect a hose, there are no leaks and it functions fine.

Not sure what I did wrong. Not a lot of experience with air lines and connections. Any suggestions on how to fix?

Make sure the brass piece in the middle is not pushed in causing the air to come out. Push it down with a screw driver or something.
