All terrain vs Mudders
I am currently running 325/60/18 (33.4 x 12.8) Mud terrains. I am thinking of going back to a 32-33 all terrain tire to improve handling and gas mileage. Do you think I will see a dramatic change in handling and gas mileage by doing this? Is is worth spending the money?
Is that 16mpg with engine mods? I get around 14 city with the engine stock, 17-18 hwy with a good tailwind.
you may notice a slight improvement with MPG but not much. I remember reading in one of the 4wd mags about mileage differences between an AT and MT in the same size. If I remember correctly, there was about 1/2 to 1 mpg difference, which really isn't that much.
So...at 15k miles/ year and 16mpg, that's 937 gallons/year. At $3.50/gallon, that's $3,279.
Say you change to AT's and gain 0.75 mpg, thats 895 gallons at $3,132, assuimg you actually gain 0.75 mpg.
That equals a savings of $147 a year (again, provided you actually see that gain and drive 15k miles/year)
So...it would take 4+ years to off set the cost of buying new ATs. By that time they are worn out and the whole thing is a wash.
Here's what you can do, send me your tiresand rims, and I'll send you mine. It won't cost you a dime and you will notice the improvement and savings imediately.
