Another Nitto Mud Grapplers Question
A couple of weeks ago I came down really hard on a small boulder hiding under snow. It poped the tire, cracked the hell out of the wheel and took a chunk out of the back tire. I have the stock km's, and will be upgrading to 35's in a couple of weeks.
Now for the Nitto's, I need to know how they handle on snow and ice. Living on a rollercoaster of a ride mile and half long drive way I have snow and then ice, so I need to make sure I am making the right decision. I am sure that any of the top M/T tire will handle the offroading done by my 4yr old son and myself. so I just need to know about snow and ice.
I read the thread that the GY's are great on the snow, but dont care for them.
thanks for everyones advise.

Was pondering the same but was going to choose between the Mud and Trail Grapplers MT. I went down to the tire shop and looked at both. I ended up going with the Trail Grapplers because it seemed the lugs werent so far apart and also the reviews around seemed like everyone good luck with performance on/offroad and wear.
Ordered them from discount tire direct. They are the 295/70R18. Paid $297 each shipped and no sales tax. Now I loaded them up and took them down to the local Discount tire for mounting and balanceing. Took them 2 hours and then they told me that "Big tires are hard to balance and they are the best we can get them" Took them home and mounted them. Wobblin all over the place!! Took them back and they said that was the best they could do with them. So I got my $ back and went to Tire Rack on the other side of town. They balanced them on their roadforce machine and they are perfect now!
They do have a definate low rumble in slow speeds. They do dance a little bit on rough roads but I aired them back and that took care of that. At 55-70mph I was shocked. Nothing that you would expect from such an aggresive tire. You definatley can hear them but it a low hum with the windows up and radio off. Crack a window or put some tunes on low and its gone. My wife even commented on how quiet they are.
Now for the snow and ice. We got dumped on a couple days after I put them on. I took off in the evening in a white out with 10" of fresh powder on the ground. These things dig in and dont stop! Played on the roads for over an hour and loved them. Not one spin at take off anywhere. Went over to my shop and went out back to the field to see how they did in some deeper drifts being we had 40mph winds. Just as impressive in 3 foot drifts.
They next morning after the roads were cleaned down to hard packed ice I went out. Digging power of course was out the window. They still did not dance and hooked right up at the hard coated intersections. Stopping was good and no sliding. But again it was hard packed snow and ice and I wasnt going like a bat out of hell either. I would imagine there really isnt anything that good on ice (except if you studded or chained) but I was impressed with the Trails. I have 3 boys. 3, 5 and 10yrs old and wouldnt worry one bit about having them in there with me going through anything as far as snow or ice. Just drive smart on ice.
Thats my .02 worth on Nitto Trail Grapplers MT

Thanks for the post everyone. It is a tough choice, i dont want to buy a tire and hate it. I have always gone with BFG but hear alot of good about Nitto. Just dont hear alot about Ice. I agree that it is ice and never is it fun. My stock KM's do an excellent job. But was looking at a more aggresive tire. I think I will start looking at the Trail Grapplers.
Would the Mud Graps compare to BFG Krawlers? or the KM2's?

Shot of the trail grappler. I looked at MUDs, and the KM2 and the both had a way big lug pattern. The crawler was similar to the Km2 but I believe they were softer. I wanted something that wire like iron and had an aggressive tread as well being it is in the pavement to.
