Default Any trick to replacing stick shift knob?

I've ordered a replacement knob for my stick shift and transfer case stick. I've read several times how hard it is to pull off the original knobs, so I'm wondering if anyone has come up with a trick or something...

Since your not going to be re-using it, im sure Vise-Grips would give you a good hold on it.........

Yeah.... So, how strong and robust is that stick and it's connection to the trans? I guess putting it in 1st gear would be best to keep it vertical when pulling/hitting upwards?

I'd rather avoid breaking something, if I can... :-)

Mine was really tight, but I did get it off just by pulling. The vice grips and hammer might make it easier though. I would just grab it and give it a shot. You wont break anything... just dont punch yourself in the chest like I did....
