Default anyone running the LoD rock sliders?

I ordered the LoD bumpers. Thinking about the rock sliders for my JKU. Interested in anyone who has them. How hard to install? Strength? I will be on the rocks with them so they have to be able to take abuse.

I've got them and love them. Since i was able to do the install, anybody should be able to handle it.

Do a search and you'll find a couple of mini write-ups.

Thanks! You nailed both issues I was concerned about - ease of install and ability to take a beating. I called LoD to see if I could get the installation instructions but they said they were re-doing them. Made me wonder. But your responses help. Much appreciated.

Hi,

I love the rock rails. Haven't punished them too hard; but, I know they are strong and offer protection that the Rubi rails might not.

Regarding the installation, the hardest part was drilling the holes required for the tapped holes. I thought I had decent drill bits; but, it took me a while to drill the frame holes. I'm sure I was doing something wrong. (I started out with smaller holes and worked my way up. I'm glad I didn't have a 4-door.)

The only concern that I have about strength of the fasteners that use the tapped holes in the frame. The frame rails aren't all that thick, and the tapped holes don't have a lot of threads in the frame rail material. I have a 2-door JK, and all but one of the rail supports use at least one of the strong skid plate bolts. I figured if there is ever a problem, I will just weld the supports to the frame.

The rails really do look great, and Chris at LoD is a great to work with.

I hope this helps.

Jeff

Here is a limited write up I did on them. It sounds much harder to install than it actually is. If I had to choose again with what I know now I would get the LOD's again in a heartbeat!!

I have them for the JKU also and Love them. I used the tips on this forum and installation was pretty straight forward and not difficult. Get a good drill and buy quality drill bits! These sliders rock!!!

Default Unibit Advice - WoL

Hi WoL,

I debated using a step bit when I installed the rails. Are a step bit and a unibit one in the same?

As I worked my up from a pilot hole at each location, I was using new bits. Several of the bits snapped. (I would blame it on them being Harbor Freight; but, I believe there may have also be a couple of craftsman bits in the mix, too.)

One reason I didn't try the step bit was that I was concerned that I might overshoot the hole size required for the tap. Are there any tips to using a unibit that will keep someone from overshooting?

Thanks

Jeff
