There is no special additive that you will need, just regular gear oil.

Although I did move up to Mobil 1 75W-140 synthetic gear oil... but I figured, after paying good money for gears and a locker, I might as well spend good money on oil too

I've been driving my JK with a front D30 Aussie all winter and we get plenty of snow here in the Midwest. It's well behaved. You can provoke the Jeep to act up in turns with an intentionally heavy right foot, but if you drive prudently you'll never know it's there.

Aussies are quiet, strong, and easy to install. And on the trail? No comparison in the more difficult venues; two lockers dominates over a rear locker alone.

Thats been my experience with the Aussie this past winter. In Oklahoma we get our fair share of snow and ice, and (like you said) if you drive as the weather dictates, it shouldn't give you a lick of problems.

It isn't a bad option but definitely consider upgrading your axle shafts. I've lost count of how many broken D30 JK axles I've seen in just the last year.

Wouldn't it be better to damage a shaft than damage the ring gear?

Yes. However, I've seen the stock axles break with so little effort that I'd want them anyway.
