Default Aussie Locker Is Loud

I put a Aussie Locker in about two months ago. I herd all these comments on how quiet they were. Mine has a pretty loud ratchet noise. I know the ratchet noise is normal but mine is loud. If I turn sharp at low speeds it locks up and the outside tire starts chirping. I can barley turn my steering either way w/o it starting to ratchet. Any ideas or has anybody had the same problems.

turn even slower lol. I dont have a aussie, but my detroit has gotten better with noise/ratcheting over time.

I am going to put thicker fluid in when I get a chance. Most people say they can't here it unless the turn Sharp I can here mine even if I barley turn.

Don't know if mine actually got quieter, or if I just got used to it and stopped noticing the ratchet.

Swap it out for a TrueTrac?
Besides the issues you described, with the winter driving in Colorado, I was much happier after pulling my front detroit and replacing with a TT. Decent price for the d30 version, but unfortunately it does require a professional install. (for those who choose not to do their own gearing, anyway).

Are you running synthetics, by chance?

I hate to say this, but I'd recommend opening up the diff and checking the install.
My Aussie was quiet except on super sharp cornering, and I never had the wheels chirp or have it lock up unless I was in 4x4.

Maybe call Aussie when you have the diff opened and get their opinion?

You commented that the tire chirped and steering was tough. Was this in 2wd? If so, something is wrong. While you'll hear some slight clicking in 2WD, the locker should be nearly invisible in 2wd street driving.

agreed. if you are experiencing noise and steering issues in 2wd, something isn't right.

I am not running synthetic due to the fact that it gets changed often (mud). In 2wd it drives fine my steering wheel is a little tighter than it was but I also replace my u-joints at the same time as the locker install. It is in 2wd when it tries to lock on tight slow turns. I called and talked to the Aussie guys and we went through my install and all looks good. To get it to lock i have to be at full lock and going super slow like turning into a parking space from being stopped.
