axle shaft help
At one point I replaced my rear axle shafts. I kept one of the old ones as a spare. I replaced my rear brakes and rotors about 10 days ago or so and last night I started hearing a noise. I got progressively worse. I took the wheel and brakes off and removed the disc....I learned that the studs had broken free and one was rubbing something in the axle housing. Please forgive my bad descriptions. I have a couple of questions. WTF did I do to do this? Did I torque them too much? Did I put the wheel back on wrong? I have AEV Pintlers that are hub centric so I don't know how I could have done that. Three were about an inch out and the other two were barely out, but not stamped in like they should be. Will I be all right to just pull out the axle shaft and swap it with the old one? Should I repair this or replace? Thanks in advance, Blaine
Pictures would help. Did you put locktite on the nuts when you reassembled? I would pull the axle and inspect the bearings. Im not sure if you can change out just the studs or if you will have to have the bearing retainer presssed off and change out the whole cage that holds the studs.
Sounds like you forgot to torque the wheel down. If you're worried about the studs, just go to a driveline shop and have them press new ones in.
Unless I am missing something, there shouldn't be any internal damage to the axle shaft. You'll want to confirm the flange is still straight though. Also inspect the wheel and lug nuts.
Personal safety is nothing to mess with. If you aren't knowledgeable and confident in inspecting everything, I strongly advise you take it to a good shop for evaluation. Sucks to spend the money, but small price to pay for safety.

Definitely take Invests advice, swap to your spare then have a driveline shop check the shaft. If it's ok, have them press new studs in and you're good to go. Hopefully.

Some shafts come with the studs already pressed in, others may come as either loose parts or just snugged in the holes, and you have to press them yourself. To me, it sounds like yours were not pressed, and ended up popping out? Or a combination of not pressed and lug nuts working loose?
