BA Rock Rails...
how hard where yours to get on? I wrestled for six hours because the brackets on the rails were off by millimeters with the mounting brackets. On mine the rails also pinch the seam of the body, and it looks like yours are as well.
Took me maybe 2 hours...and that's counting running to the depot for some bolts that BA forgot to put in the box. But yeah, they do pinch the seem. I'm still kinda worried about hot stable they're gonna be on the trail. Anyone have any ideas?
I know the stock rubi rails are pretty tough. I have pounded and pivoted on mine with no problems. If these bolt into the factory locations, should be pretty tough because the whole thing looks beefier.
Well...I've gotta say that after running my Body Armor rails at Rausch, I wouldn't recommend them for serious wheeling. They make a great step, and I love how they look. The rails themselves are about as solid your ever gonna get--the issue is the mounting.
I put the d-side of my Jeep, up on a rock, just catching the very outside of the rock rail. Initially it appeared to take take the load on the rail with only minor scratches. The rock rail itself is undamaged other than minor gouging and powdercoat chips, but....
I was under my Jeep checking/torquing bolts over the last few days and I noticed something looked odd. Sure enough, my d-side pinch seam is now bent about 1/8" or so at each of the three mounting points along the pinch seam; the surface mounting points under the Jeep are all visibly pulled downward. Please keep in mind, I'm as gentle as can be when wheeling my Jeep--it's my DD so I need to keep it driveable.
So, based on the performance of my Body Armor rails under what I would consider moderate wheeling conditions, my Jeep was damaged (though the rails weren't.)
The issue is rotational torque on the mounting points. The rails are solid, but the mounting points can't handle the torque load if you set the outside of the rail (the tube part) on a rock.
So, IMHO, I wouldn't use the rail as a jack point unless it was a last resort, or you didn't care if you twisted your pinch seam, and bent the underside of your tub.
I really wish I had never ordered from Body Armor.
It took them shipping me four sets of rails (one set was lost in shipping) to get one set of rails that would even come close to mounting correctly. Granted they did let me keep the first two sets. So for ocaissional ligt duty protection for your rails with the added bonus of the step, they're decent. If you're building a rig to wheel on rocks, my experience (and damaged received) would suggest staying away from Body Armor rails.
As soon as I can get some money together, I'm going to order Shrockworks frame mounted rails--that's why I had gone with Body Armor in the first place as the orignal design was frame mounted, but they somehow couldn't figure out how to get that right and switched to the body mount. PM me if you want more details on the long list of issues I've had with my rails.
