Default backspacing question

Hey,
I am having a hard time understanding backspacing. I have 35'' tires on stock 17'' rims and am using 1.5'' spacers. I want to change my rims and not have to use spacers. Will i want a positive or negative offset?
The rims i am interested in come in two wheel offsets
-12
and
18
Which one would i want, and why?
Thanks for your help guys!

Try this one.

Looks like negative offset = less backspace.

Backspacing and offset are basically two different ways of measuring the same thing. Personally, I think BS is much easier to understand and visualize. Everyone here seems to agree that 4.5 inches of BS is just about perfect for the JK's.
