Baja MTZ vs ATZ
Baja MTZ vs ATZ
What kind of miles are we looking at for these?
Which one is better for SoCal stuff?

I thought I wanted an AT. . . I really likr the look and performance of the MT.
(this is a daily driver, running BFG muds now, they are ok)

My daily driver's MTZs have 7,000 miles on them, I've been very impressed in the tire for all road/off-road and weather types. With regular rotation, some talk about getting 50,000 miles out of them.

I have 40000miles on my ATZ (33s) with just under half tread left. I daily drive my jeep and wheel about once a month. I have had no issues with the tire. I live in the south, so deep, thick mud will make the tire a slick pretty fast. Although I have been very pleased with the traction that they have on rocks. After all, there an AT tire.
The only problem I had with MTZs was when I hit shallow standing water at high speeds, i.e. water puddling on the freeway.
The tires would grab and pull hard to the puddle side... the water just couldn't get through the tread fast enough. But that's what makes them a good mud tire, so you can't have everything!
Otherwise I loved them.

I've run both. They are both very good tires in their class.
Although I've never developed a test for hard core rock crawling in my own rig, the MTZ performed better on rocks and the wet stuff that is so rare around here (I think they call it mud
).
I switched to ATZs because I noticed they performed better aired down on sand on other Jeeps. Plus in those days I made regular runs to Baja, so road trip was noticeably quieter and smoother.
Both tires balanced extremely well.
The ATZs had a longer tread life, if that is one of your deciding factors.

Ran 31x10.50 on my '01 XJ. They are one of the best DD street mud tires I have ever used. They are quiet and get you where you want to go. Hydroplaning is not a real problem as long as you arent at highway speeds.
