I have been running a XRC8 for about 5 years now. It's been great.

How do you know what size/capacity winch to get. Say 8k or 10k or 12k. I assume a 2 door would be fine with a 8k but will it be too small for a 4 door etc? Does it depend on how heavy your jeep is?

X3 on Recon. Great winch. Works great and includes synthetic line.

A JKU is around 4,000lbs ( don't know about the 2 door). 4,000lbs X 1.5 = 6,000lbs. So they say a 6K winch will do. I disagree. Sure you can use snatch blocks ect to help the winch, but it has been my experience that with winches bigger is better. I have run a Warn HS9500i for years on my Scrambler. There have been times when it has struggled to get me or someone else out (stuck bad). On my JKUR I went with the Warn Zeon 10K. When choosing a winch there are a lot of factors to look at; current draw, recovery speed, reliability ect. I know the OP said not to mention Warn, but Warn was, is and will be my only winch option unless something better emerges. The way I look at it is if it comes to me needing the winch then I am in a bad way. I don't want to have to worry if the thing is going to work. I have seen situations where a failed winch can result in major vehicle damage or injury (roll overs ect). My advice is save your money just a little longer and get the Warn. Before you beat me up I know there are lower cost decent winches out there but IMHO I would rather spend a little more for the piece of mind.
