Default Bestop Flex-A-Trunk production started

I talked to some representatives from Bestop last night at an SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) dinner where the topic of the evening was "The 2007 JK Wrangler". The reps there told me they started full production last Friday 3/16/07 so if you have one on order it should be shipping in the next couple weeks...

I'm still wondering whether to get this trunk or the metal one. The plastic kind of scares me from a security standpoint but I like how functional the thing is!

I'm in the same boat. I like the design of the plastic, but I wonder if it's as secure as a full metal box.

Yes, it's a relative question. Metal is better than plastic most of the time, but plastic can really be tough too. I don' t know if I can really decide until I see them both for myself.

I just sent an email over to Bestop to see if there's a place I can go see one first hand. I live in Metro Detroit so they should have some offices around here to coincide with the Jeep Engineering building.

i really hate to be a downer, but my experience with the trunk is a bit disappointing.
first of all, the order came incomplete and is missing one of the three top plastic panels, an oversight i hope quadratec or bestop will quickly take care of. more importantly, i feel that the trunk is a visual deterrent at best (and alot of times that is enough) but it wouldnt take much effort at all to pry this thing open. the whole thing is secured with a couple long thin bolts and a few self tapping ones that suggest you tap into the actual bed of the vehicle itself. while i think it is perfectly functional, i have to question my own decision because it was really nice to be able to flip the seats down and have a full bed to haul stuff. now there is a big plastic box in the way. i couldnt even throw a chair in there without disassembling one or the other.

this is all minor stuff, but something to think about when making a purchase. do you really need it or just want it? personally i am finding in retrospect my decision has erred on the latter.

i ordered the element doors as well and so look forward to a better experience with those.

thanks.

to further compound my gripes it must be noted when looking at this product from a product design standpoint, there are many other ways that dont require a high level of ingenuity to engineer a far more efficient and facile product in terms of both structural integrity and functional modularity. collapsible, hinged, metal boxes have been around for a long time and could have been readily adopted in this design, and in keeping more with the form/function/toughness spirit of the jeep. im probably way to sensitive too these things but i feel we all are and the design of this product is underwhelming. sorry!
