Default Bilstein 5160/5165

Anyone got nice or bad things to say about the Bilstein 5160/5165 series reservoir shocks. They do have a floating piston in the reservoir but that may be just a work around for not having rebound/comp adjustment. Thought I might like the adjustable Kings but sticker shock there. So other compromise could be Fox but heard they were stiff unless one wants to cough $560/corner up here for adjustables in which case I would like to go for Kings.
So am looking for a nice on road ride over my Bilstein 5100's and long life with rebuildable capability. Offroad never sees me going fast and my 5100's actually do well offroad. Believe it is remote reservoir I am looking for for the damping ability but the Jeep will never get into dunes etc where the compression and rebounds are continuous and long travel. Any suggestions people.

They are basically the 5100 with a bit more travel. Valving and pressure area the same as the 5100 so no difference in ride. In Bilstien you need to look at the 7100 series and up to find a shock that is rebuildable that you can tune. The remote res is not for dampening, it is to move the IFP to the res for more travel and it gives you more oil capicity for cooling. Dampening, same as compression is adjusted with the valving and by the nitrogen charge.
I would look into the Metal Cloak rocksport shocks.

Bilsteins are a digressive damping design, which does not do you any favors for on-road ride, but they really don't perform well on either end of the curve. They are better than stock or a part's store shock, but that is about it unless you step up to the 7100s (I don't have experience with these but heard good things). I had the 5100 series on two lifted rigs (ZJ and JKU) and, like you said, they did OK off road if cruising around, but push them much and they didn't do the job. They also didn't absorb small hits on the street well either. I swapped them out on the JKU in a deal for a set of Rancho RSX9000s adjustables, and the ride quality improved significantly. Rancho's are not top shelf dampers by any means, but still outperformed the Bilsteins by a good bit, both on an off road. Kings are great but overpriced in my opinion and Fox is a good, middle of the road linear damper.

For a budget damper, the RSX9000s are a pretty good choice and you can adjust the stiffness from grampa's Caddy to dump truck. Would I get them again, probably not but only because I want to step up.

When I replace the Rancho's in 1-2 years, I plan on going with Falcon 3.3 adjustables.

Now the Falcons are an overpriced over hyped shock. Lots of buzz in the social media when they came out but over time reviews are not that great. If I were going to pay that much for shocks I would go with coil overs or a 3 tube bypass.

I am not a fan at all. Besides O2 sensors, these shocks were my most frequent replacement item. I run the Jeep hard, but was never happy with the lifespan of these shocks. And they went out randomly. I finally pulled them all off and went with adjustable shocks. To say I am happy would be a massive understatement. I run them at 8 on the highway and they hold the road with almost zero lean. When I go offroad, I just change them to a 1 or 2 for a really soft ride inside. The key with adjustables is to never run them at 5. Either run them tight or loose. Highway curves have never felt more solid and I am on a 4" lift.

I will go with Dirtman's advice and thanks for that. Reason is his knowledge and too many people had good things to say about the Rocksports. Thanks for all the inputs and comments folks.
