Default on board air

Looming into getting on board air. Wondering what systems are best. What do I look for in it. And what can it do. My reason for getting it one to air up tires two so when I regear I can go with air lockers. Three if I can find a set up that will allow it use air tools on the trail.

What does anyone advise????

FWIW Happy enough with the ARB middle of the road here. The max is 100 psi and it airs ties okay (bigger the tires longer it will take so may want to consider that). Will also work with 2 lockers, but most of the air tools (at least the ones I looked at) were operating at 100. 100 max on the unit and an operating level of 100 for tools, not good. May work by supplementing with a tank but a bigger / better unit would do the same from jump street I think. Vair really has some nice units and I may end up there myself.

I have a big Viair single that is pretty well made. It will inflate jeep tires and bus tires, and raise the air suspension on my bus. It would even keep the bus's air brakes working in an emergency - but it won't put out enuf air for air tools. Even the biggest and best 12V compressors have pretty modest output compared with a shop compressor.

To use with air accessories like an air locker, an accumulator tank and regulator makes for a much better system than the compressor alone.

While yer at it, hang an air horn on that puppy!

A little pricey, but this is what went with. Installing it now with a tank mounted under the Jeep on the framerail. It's pretty big too, but I was able to make a bracket to mount it right next to master brake cylinder.

And here are the specs: CKMTA12

Oasis makes on demand compressors. They are supposed to be able to run air tools without a tank. They are pricey and draw a lot of amps.

There is a good article in the most recent issue of JP Magazine discussing the pros and cons of different OBA systems.
