Default On Board Air Tank

I'm giving up on my HF portable and am looking for an on board air solution. The specs on both the ARB and Viair 450 pumps by themselves aren't too impressive.

If I use a 2 or 2.5 gallon air tank along with an air compressor, how much faster can I pump up tires?

Are you looking for a stopwatch time answer? I can't give that, but any kinda tank added will certainly make a compressor much more effective. I have the Viair airsource 20005 unit, myself. As with a few other things, I have not installed it yet, but the reviews are pretty good.

Ideally, yes. The specs I've seen from the two units talk about inflating a 33 inch tire from 15lbs - 30lbs in about 5-6 minutes. Heck, I've got 4 of them, plus there's always at least 1 or 2 other people on the campout with me that needs air. I don't want to spend an hour on the side of the road airing up.

I'm thinking that having a 2+ gallon tank filled at 150 psi must cut that time way down, I just don't know by how much.

I understand. ....and I wasn't tryin to be smart. I know there are specs for that, I just don't have min installed so I couldn't give you that. I would give Viair a call. They are a sponsor here. I'm sure they can give you that info. Might even check their site. It may be there.

I know you weren't. I've already got a PM to the Viair guy. Hopefully he can help me. Their site isn't much help. I've also PM'd a guy who has the Viair setup with tank and am waiting patiently for a reply.

Here you go Frank hope it helps....not sure if it has a lot of the tank design on-board data but it'll give you a baseline to compare.

Check this one out. http://www.viaircorp.com/OffRoad/20003.html I got the high flow unit, but that is the fast fill unit. Click on where it says "fill rates". That should give you some idea.

Thanks, Frank. It's not exactly what I'm looking for, but does hint that having a tank already filled dramatically reduces fill times.

This is why I think they make these hybrid systems - an air compressor that fills a tank. I'm guessing (hoping, actually) that you turn on the system after the run and it fills the tank. Then you air up 4 tires in about 5 minutes from the tank and off you go.

I would just love to hear confirmation from people that are running the system.

Frank,

I received your PM. I'll respond here for public viewing.
We've designed multiple On Board Air Systems and multiple Portable Air Compressors. If you follow the link below it will take you to our OBA page.
http://www.viaircorp.com/OffRoad/oba.html
To view the product details, select a specific OBA by clicking on the image, then click the "Fill Rates" link on the right hand side.
For example: If you were to select the Heavy Duty On Board Air System and look at the fill rates, it will take you here:
http://www.viaircorp.com/OffRoad/Specs/10005_fr.html
The fill rates on a 35" tire are displayed at the very bottom.

HEAVY DUTY Fill Rates
2.5 Gallon TankFill Rate0 To 145 PSI
2 Min. 20 Sec.
110 To 145 PSI
48 Sec.
33" x 12.5" Fill Rate0 To 30 PSI
4 Min. 00 Sec.
15 To 30 PSI
2 Min. 00 Sec.
35" x 12.5" Fill Rate0 To 30 PSI
4 Min. 50 Sec.
15 To 30 PSI
2 Min. 20 Sec.

You can do this for every On Board Air System to see the fill rates and even get the dimensional drawings, performance data, plumbing recommendations etc.

OR...If you're interested in a Portable Air Compressor, start from our portable compressor section:
