Default broke down on way home from off rd

Hi Guys
I am located in south Florida and went to lazy springs today for go topless day. Lots of fun. I did not go crazy this time around - did some hill trails - some light mud and not deep water. i normally got much deeper.
Any ways everything was fine until the end of the day.
I normally drive off rd in 4 low - I now learned that this is only for hard stuff. anyways towards the end of the day the jeep was not running right so I went to 4 high and then no problems.
on our way home my jeep had a load winning noise when the gas is pressed (now I had this before but very low and only came on when you really press the gas) (I think this might be a timing belt)
so moving along even with the winning sound jeep was driving fine. about 60 miles into the drive 80mil to go the engine temp gage went all the way up then dropped all the way down. battery light came on along with the engine temp light. still the jeep was driving ok. about 10 mil more the steering wheel basically locked up - still can steer a bit so I keep on going. 10-20 mil latter I lost power the jeep just did not want to speed up and started to slow down. engine light now came on. at this point I wanted to get off this highway and next exit was about 10 mil. I made it just to the ramp when the jeep died and will not start after that. 6 mile to the dealer too lol
so had to get a tow
does anyone have any clue whats is going on here. what could of went wrong with the jeep. did I drive it to log to fry the engine. could this be the timing belt - could it have over heated.

Also on a side note I just got my jeep back from the shop on Friday from upgrading to 4.88 gears and 37 tiers also programed with supper chips. all done by 4 wheel parts and they always do good work.
I don't think this has anything to do with above

thanks

Not sure what year or engine you have, but it sounds like the accessory drive belt (AKA serpentine belt) failed -- Because it drives the water (engine coolant) pump, power steering, and alternator.

Hate to say this, but over-heating can be an engine killer. But the belt is cheap, and only takes a few minutes to replace.

Something may have damaged the belt, so a good mechanic is going to check all the driven and idler pulleys before replacing the belt. At a bare minimum, check how the oil looks before trying to start it again.

Hope for the best...

man I over heated the last time I went out and broke down before I got on the highway - had a new radiator put in by jeep. but some of the Samy things happen but then had other things happen as well and I can start the car last time
oil is low as I am dew for a change - also had a slight leek that I had to go to the dealer for anyways but very minor leak

so who knows

I know this much: You really need a competent mechanic at this point. Most things that go wrong are traceable back to people that work on it, or people that operate it.

1. on our way home my jeep had a load winning noise when the gas is pressed....kept on driving....
2. about 60 miles into the drive 80mil to go the engine temp gage went all the way up then dropped all the way down. battery light came on along with the engine temp light.... still kept on driving...
3. about 10 mil more the steering wheel basically locked up - still can steer a bit so you keep on going...
4. 10-20 mil latter I lost power the jeep just did not want to speed up and started to slow down. engine light now came on. at this point I wanted to get off this highway and next exit was about 10 miles.....kept on driving

No matter who does your maintenance when you just keep on driving when all of this happens you become guilty of destroying your own vehicle. That is why those lights come on in the first place. You should have stopped with the whining noise and had it towed then, not worth it to destroy it and then get it towed. Just my humble opinion.

The grammar and sentence structure was enough for me to quit.

Never heard a jeep load winning

I'll add that, FWIW, changing the belt on a 3.6 is more than a few minutes and quite the pita for a belt swap to include removing the alternator bracket. Complete shit engineering. A 1/2" breaker bar, 3" 1/2 extension, ratchet, 10, 13, 14 & 15mm sockets 3/8 extension and a screwdriver or 5/16 nut driver.

So if you carry a spare belt (as all should if you're wheeling), plan on these tools as well.

And yea, sounds like you're screwed.

If it WAS just the belt you took care of that and kept driving, possibly/probably causing other heat related and wonky electrical issues.

The last time I heard a story like this, it was my bosses 69 year old wife who kept driving through all the warning signs. Is this the same person ? Could it be ?
